Machine Tool Laboratory WZL of RWTH Aachen

For decades, the Machine Tool Laboratory (WZL) of the RWTH Aachen University has been a synonym for successful and forward-looking research in the field of production technology. In six research areas, both basic research projects and research projects oriented to the requirements of industry are carried out and, in addition, practical solutions for rationalizing production are developed.
The objective of dealing with the entire field of production engineering in one company results in a broad field of work, which is oriented towards the company divisions of development and design, quality management, organization, work preparation, production and assembly as well as control and automation.
The Machine Tool Laboratory is managed by the four professors Thomas Bergs (Manufacturing Processes, Gear Technology), Christian Brecher (Machine Tools, Assembly Technology, Cluster of Excellence, Gear Technology), Robert Schmitt (Production Measurement and Quality Management) and Günther Schuh (Production Systematics).

The research carried out at the WZL is characterized by close cooperation between the various disciplines and a balanced mix of basic research and application-oriented development. As a rule, the research work is carried out jointly with a wide range of industrial companies. This ensures that the research results are quickly transferred into operational practice.
The main task of the Machine Tool Laboratory as a university institute is the practice-oriented training of highly qualified young engineers. The knowledge gained from the research projects flows directly into the teaching, which is thus always kept up to date. As one of the largest European universities, the RWTH offers an excellent environment for comprehensive and interdisciplinary studies.
